RENEWAL

WHEN DO I HAVE TO RENEW?

You can renew your SORA license up to 90 days before it expires. Renewing early does not change the length of your license. Unarmed licenses last for 2 years, and armed licenses last for 1 year. You must renew before the expiration date.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CERTIFICATION EXPIRES?

If you do not renew before your expiration date, you will have to start the entire SORA process again. This includes fingerprinting, registering, and completing the full training.

HOW DO I RENEW MY CERTIFICATION?

Log into your NJ State Police account at https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do.
Click on "Renewal Applicant," then go to "My Applications," choose "Security Officer," and click "Submit Renewal."
Be ready to pay with a credit card because the system may log you out if you take too long.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The renewal fee is $80.87, paid to the NJ State Police.
There is also a separate cost for the one-day recertification class.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO BRING TO THE RENEWAL CLASS?

Whether your class is virtual or in person, bring the following:

  • Your original SORA ID card

  • A government-issued photo ID

  • A screenshot or printout from the NJ State Police website that shows your renewal ID number

FIRST TIME APPLICANTS

What is SORA?

The Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) was passed in New Jersey in 2007 to establish standardized training and certification for all contract security positions across the state.

To become certified, individuals must complete a three-step process within 30 days:

1. Register with the New Jersey State Police

2. Complete 24 hours of training with a certified SORA instructor

3. Get fingerprinted by the state’s approved vendor

All steps require a valid government-issued photo ID, and all fees must be paid by credit or debit card — cash is not accepted. If you don’t have a card, a prepaid card from CVS or another retailer will work.

What Topics Are Covered in SORA Training?

Our comprehensive training is designed to prepare individuals for a range of real-world security situations.

Topics include:

  • The NJ Attorney General’s Use of Force Policy

  • Terrorism awareness

  • Cargo theft prevention

  • Identifying suspicious letters and packages

  • First aid basics

  • The incident command system

  • Professional ethics and conduct

  • Report writing techniques

  • How to de-escalate verbal conflicts

  • And more
